Our heritage
The history of International Fish Canners dates back to 1883 when at the time it was known as British Fish Canners, owned also by two brothers, the Maconochies! Back then it was the largest cannery in the world, supplying troops during the Boer war and both World Wars. The factory was bombed in WWII and rebuilt in 1942. IFC was officially formed in 1983 by a group of Norwegians, and in 1991 came under the ownership of the Clark family, becoming the first of the IFC Group of companies and the UK’s only fish cannery. In 1995, IFC Group acquired 25% of Nor Sea Foods, a specialist in smoked mackerel and kippers into mainstream UK retail and export markets. This became 100% in 2006 when Nor Sea was fully integrated into the group. Nolan Seafoods followed in 2017 adding a white fish dimension to the group which prior to that had focussed solely on pelagic species. DG Nolan also joined the group in 2017, bringing with it our own in-house cold store and blast-freezing operation. In 2021 our last acquisition took place, J Charles a small but reputable local processor of specialty items.
